On 22nd June 2023, our enthusiastic CCKK Diploma in Pharmacy students embarked on an eye-opening educational journey to Lok Kawi Zoo. The trip aimed to broaden their understanding of the fascinating world of animal health and its correlation to human well-being.
One of the key insights gained during this excursion was the striking similarity between animal and human illnesses. Our students discovered that animals, like humans, can experience ailments such as constipation, diarrhea, and conjunctivitis. What's even more astonishing is that the medications used to treat these conditions are often similar, except for felines.
The highlight of the visit was witnessing the veterinary team conducting screenings and check-ups on the magnificent orangutans. It was akin to a regular human medical examination, as the vets screened for tuberculosis, examined urine samples, and analyzed feces.
Our students were also made aware that hunting wildlife in Sabah is illegal and witnessed firsthand the consequences of misusing wildlife for traditional medicine.
Overall, the CCKK Diploma in Pharmacy students' trip to Lok Kawi Zoo was an educational and eye-opening experience. It enhanced their understanding of the intricate link between animal and human health, reinforced the significance of ethical healthcare practices, and highlighted the urgent need for wildlife conservation.
